Alabama Banana Pudding

3/4 cup sugar   
Dash of salt   
1/4 cup flour   
3 egg yolks, beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups milk
2-4 bananas, sliced
15 vanilla wafers

Combine sugar, salt, and flour; add to egg yolks and vanilla.  Heat milk in saucepan; slowly add egg mixture.  Cook until thick.  Arrange wafers and bananas in shallow 1 1/2-quart baking dish.  Add pudding. 

3 egg whites   
6 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

To make meringue, beat egg whites till frothy, then gradually add sugar, then vanilla and beat until very stiff.  Spread over pudding and bake at 400 degrees until golden brown.  Serve warm or cold.  Serves 8.
