Cherry Winks

2 1/4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup softened butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
1 cup chopped nutmeats
1 cup finely cut, pitted dates
1/3 cup finely cut maraschino cherries
2/3 cup cornflake crumbs, or 2 1/2 cups cornflakes, crushed into fine crumbs
18 maraschino cherries, cut into quarters

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.  Blend butter and sugar; add eggs and beat well.  Stir in milk and vanilla.  Add flour mixture, nutmeats, dates, and finely cut cherries; mix well.  Shape dough into balls using 1 level tablespoon dough for each.  Roll balls in cornflake crumbs and place on greased baking sheets.  Top each cookie with 1/4 maraschino cherry.  Bake in moderate 375° oven about 12 minutes, or until lightly browned.  Yields about 6 dozen cookies, 2 inches in diameter.
