From Manhattan to Mississippi:
A New Yorker Falls in Love with the South
New Yorker Daisy Karam-Read
had no idea what life held in store for her when she impetuously married a southern gentleman and moved to Mississippi.
An exciting first book by Karam-Read highlighting her journey, From Manhattan to Mississippi:
A New Yorker Falls in Love with the South, is available in bookstores in mid-September 2007.
From Manhattan to Mississippi: A New Yorker Falls
in Love with the South, this fascinating debut book by a European-born
New Yorker who resided in Los Angeles for fourteen years celebrates the virtues of Mississippi and the Deep South. The
author takes a loving look at the uniqueness of Mississippi, which, she says, “is unlike any place I’ve ever lived—and
that includes Austria and Germany. These essays are about my eye-opening experiences in Mississippi. When I moved
to Ocean Springs in mid-1998, I was amazed by the marvelous people and lifestyle I encountered. As I became increasingly enamored
with life in Mississippi, I grew dismayed by the prejudices most of America still harbors regarding this vulnerable region.
That inspired me to write this little book; as an outsider, I try to bring a fresh eye to the Magnolia State.”
Daisy Karam-Read takes a new approach to the South in general and Mississippi in particular; it’s refreshing
to read the views of an open-minded northerner who has traveled extensively. Karam-Read’s observations on a variety
of topics (Southerners Don’t Complain, To Be Southern Is to Talk, The Southern Man’s Voice, Even the Women Love
Football Here!, etc.) provide an articulate and entertaining critique of an often misunderstood region.
