“I stand in ecstatic awe of the artist who can grab a moment out of our lives and with a few deft brushstrokes, capture it for us forever.  Miriam Weems is just such an artist.  She brings us all the comforts and soulful ease of our beloved Mississippi.  Her colors reverberate in our memories of the simplest things that bring us the greatest joy.”

New book features works by local artist Miriam Weems

Foreword by Jill Conner Browne

Artist Miriam Weems has found a niche in creating memories for people through her paintings.  Mostly Mississippi includes over 100 of Weems’ paintings, which are happy and fun; their vibrant colors never fail to brighten any setting.  In her own distinctive style, Miriam’s Mississippi impressionisms capture and celebrate a variety of Mississippi landscapes, traditions, and personalities. When asked how the book came about, Miriam answered, “In 2006, Ole Miss Chancellor Robert Khayat asked me to have an art show at the University Museum.  I called it ‘Mostly Mississippi.’  My dear friend Virginia Buchanan attended the show and suggested that I collect some representative paintings for a book.”  The result is Mostly Mississippi, a collection of paintings by Miriam Weems.

Among the vast array of paintings included are Eudora Welty’s garden, Christmas in Belhaven, the Governor’s Mansion, the Grove at Ole Miss, Rowan Oak, the Neshoba County Fair, the Natchez Trace, the Canton Flea Market,  Hal and Mal’s, and even Miriam’s favorite dog Sissy.

Miriam’s artwork graces many homes throughout Mississippi, as well across the nation.  From charitable works donated for auction to paintings for friends like Gary and Mary Ann Mobley Collins and Archie and Olivia Manning, this book is full of personal memories that bring the collectors great joy.

Sweet Potato Queen Jill Conner Browne describes Miriam in the foreword.

Mostly Mississippi is available at bookstores, gift shops, online at www.quailridge.com, or by calling Quail Ridge Press at 1.800.343.1583.
